We believe that mobile computer hardware are at a disruptive price/performance point and is poised for a revolution u2013 if only we could have more access to developing our own applications more easily.
rnMobile computers (Apple iPads, Google Android, Microsoft Surface, etc) have become ubiquitous. These compact platforms include tremendous hardware capability for computing and human interface. Furthermore, with the current level of innovation, prices for the core hardware have dropped to a point where an $80 7u201d pad with full functionality touch screen, camera, wifi, accelerometers, HDMI and USB ports are becoming available (retail).
rnUnfortunately, the capabilities of the hardware have been restricted by the software that runs on it. We have developed a linux based operating system and development environment that boots from a micro SD card allowing a developer to directly interface with a lower-cost 7u201d pads wirelessly (802.11 wifi) and, using a browser based development environment (Google Chrome) running on another PC, could develop any custom application they choose using the python scripting language. With a few lines of python code, a user could take a pad and convert it into something as simple as a digital picture frame that also links with online photo sites such as Picasa or even Facebook, make an interactive restaurant menu, a console for collecting data from multiple sensors u2013 the possibilities are endless. The drivers for all the hardware features and the operating system have been ported for a select number of commercially available pads. We are expanding the number of pads our development environment is currently compatible with as newer (faster) processors become available.
rnFor the Makers Faire, we will bring a number of pads that will run the MICILE development software. We will demo a number of applications we have developed (including the Python script that was used to generate them) and train interested visitors on how they could develop their own applications. A full interactive training session is being planned.n”,”public_description”:”MICILE (mobile computing unleashed) is a Linux based OS and IDE that boots a tablet off of a microSD card.
