Citizens in Space

{“form_type”:”exhibit”,”maker_faire”:”2013_bayarea”,”uid”:”021b79c9cf844233a0ad3d21932a79dd”,”tags”:”biology, chemistry, diy-projects, education, engineering, flying, rockets”,”cats”:”electronics, arduino, raspberry-pi, science, open-source-hardware”,”project_name”:”Citizens in Space”,”private_description”:”Citizens in Space is a nonprofit project of the United States Rocket Academy that promotes citizen science and citizen space exploration. We have purchased 10 flights on the XCOR Lynx spacecraft, currently under construction at Mojave Air and Space Port, which we are making available to the citizen-science community. We are seeking 100 citizen-science experiments and 10 citizen astronauts to fly as payload operators.
rnTo carry these experiments, we are working with the Space Engineering Research Center at Texas A&M University to develop the Lynx Cub Payload Carrier. This payload carrier fits behind the pilot\’s seat, allowing up to 12 small experiments to fly as secondary payloads on any Lynx flight. Lynx Cub payloads are based on the popular 1U, 2U, and 3U CubeSat form factors, which are international standards for small payloads. In addition to flying our own experiments, the Lynx Cub Carrier will be made available to other users as an open-source hardware design as well as ready-to-fly hardware.
rnTo educate the citizen-science and Maker communities about suborbital flight opportunities, Citizens in Space is developing the Space Hacker Workshop for Suborbital Experiments. The first such workshop is being held in Mountain View on May 4-5 in cooperation with the Silicon Valley Space Center, Infinity Aerospace (developer of the open-source ArduLab), and other members of the Silicon Valley space community. The workshop will later be repeated at other locations throughout the United States.
rnAdditionally, Citizens in Space is sponsoring the High Altitude Astrobiology Challenge, which is offering a $10,000 prize for the development of hardware that can fly on the Lynx and collect microorganisms from the edge of space. Citizens in Space is currently working with NASA to put together a judging panel and criteria for the competition. “,”public_description”:”Do you have the Right Stuff to be a citizen scientist or citizen astronaut?
