Produce can also be retrained to follow a circadian-rhythm based on light and dark periods.rnThis prompted me to design and build a u201csmartu201d refrigerator- a microcontroller based system that entrains fresh produce based upon smart lights, to follow circadian rhythms for phytochemical production centered on the consumer\’s schedule. This would notify users of readiness, and enable consumers to eat produce at its peak.rnI validated parts of the experimentation from the above study, to entrain certain vegetables (cabbage, carrots, and broccoli) and using mass spectrometry to compare phytochemical levels with untrained produce. rnI designed and built a smart lighting system to entrain produce in the refrigerator using u201cRaspberry Piu201d, a credit card-sized Linux microcomputer, to regulate LED lighting inside containers in a refrigerator. Using Python, I programmed it to accept inputs on produce-type and shelving time, and automatically regulate lighting based upon the circadian rhythm of the vegetables that I experimented. It sends email and SMS text updates when the produce is at its peak. Users can interface with the scheduling through a webpage or a smartphone app.rn rnThis u201csmartu201d refrigerator-based circadian-lighting system enhances phytochemical production ensuring produce is kept on a constant circadian rhythm from picking to consumption, increasing health benefits through increased nutritional content for the consumer.rn”,”public_description”:”Raspberry Pi-controlled Smart Refrigerator helps hack your health with smart lighting to simulate circadian rhythms in fresh produce, and emailing or texting you when vegetables are at their peak nutrition for you to consume”,”project_photo”:”http://makerfaire.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/joseph-project-picture-cropped.jpg”,”project_photo_thumb”:”http://makerfaire.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/joseph-project-picture-cropped-500×275.jpg”,”project_website”:””,”project_video”:””,”food”:”No”,”food_details”:””,”org_type”:”None of the above”,”large_non_profit”:””,”sales”:”No”,”sales_details”:””,”crowdsource_funding”:”No”,”cf_details”:””,”booth_size”:”Tabletop”,”booth_size_details”:””,”tables_chairs”:”Standard”,”tables_chairs_details”:””,”layout”:””,”activity”:”No”,”placement”:”I am presenting with my brother Daniel Anand (Age 13) – Innovations in Wheelchair Design, and would like to be next to his exhibit, if possible.”,”booth_location”:”Either”,”booth_options”:["With other Makers under a large tent","Asphalt"],”lighting”:”Normal”,”noise”:”Normal – does not interfere with normal conversation”,”power”:”Yes”,”what_are_you_powering”:”A dorm-size refrigerator, a laptop, raspberry pi and external lighting, computer monitor”,”amps”:”10 amp circuit (501-1000 watts, 120V)”,”amps_details”:””,”internet”:”My exhibit must have WiFi internet access to work”,”radio”:”No”,”radio_frequency”:””,”radio_details”:””,”fire”:”No”,”hands_on”:”No”,”solicit”:””,”safety_details”:””,”email”:”theanands@yahoo.com”,”name”:”Vijay Anand”,”maker”:”One maker”,”maker_name”:”Joseph Anand”,”maker_email”:”joseph@anandfamily.org”,”maker_bio”:”I am a home-schooled high school inventor, maker and technologist, interested in a career through the US Air Force Academy, developing technology to solve relevant problems. “,”maker_twitter”:””,”maker_photo”:”http://makerfaire.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/086.jpg”,”maker_photo_thumb”:”http://makerfaire.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/086-357×500.jpg”,”m_maker_name”:["Vijay Anand"],”m_maker_email”:["theanands@yahoo.com"],”m_maker_photo”:[""],”m_maker_photo_thumb”:””,”m_maker_twitter”:””,”m_maker_bio”:[""],”m_maker_gigyaid”:["33f5859263334171a84fe669aed8d5d0"],”group_name”:””,”group_bio”:””,”group_twitter”:””,”group_photo”:””,”group_photo_thumb”:””,”group_website”:””,”phone1″:”216-262-3357″,”phone1_type”:”mobile”,”phone2″:”216-233-3006″,”phone2_type”:”mobile”,”private_address”:”340 N.
